Ministry on the Margins at Pathway Church (Danville)
Pathway Church (formerly Westover Church of God) will turn 53 this year. Over the years our community has evolved into a more multicultural community. In 2015, the church underwent a rebranding project and changed the name of the church to Pathway Church. We also updated our signage and redesigned our platform in the sanctuary to reflect a more contemporary atmosphere.
The church has an updated children’s church, education areas, and fellowship hall.
Mark 16:15 "And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel…." The church has worked to fulfill that commission by opening wide our doors to our entire community. Pathway Church has evolved into an inclusive multicultural congregation. We currently have eleven nationalities represented.
One lady from Hong Kong was so excited about her new experience with God that she sent DVDs of our services home to her sister. It wasn’t long until she too found Christ as her savior. She flew to America and I had the privilege of baptizing Wui Yiu Karine at Pathway.
The Clerveau’s are a beautiful family from Haiti. Reggie got a job at our local hospital when they moved to Danville. We had been praying for a family who could provide a strong Christian example for the children in the church, and the Clerveau's have fit the bill in every way. They are faithful willing workers. Reggie and his son handle our media and sound and do a great job.
There is a 19% increase Hispanic population within 5 miles of our church, and we have a vision to reach them. We have partnered with Pastor Omar Benagus to provide Spanish language ministry at the church, and he is doing a fabulous job. The Hispanic ministry is reaching people from 9 different Latin-American countries. Our newest family is Rev. Dr. Charles Hairston and his beautiful wife Judy. Dr. Hairston has served several very successful African American Baptist churches in our area. God spoke to him and told him to leave his church and come to Pathway. He has embraced Church of God doctrine and practice and is on fire about reaching our community for Jesus.
We are reaching out to our community by providing court ordered Anger Management/ domestic violence classes for first offenders every Monday. For many years, we have had a recovery program for those struggling with addiction. Last year, we hosted a community day where we share a BBQ meal, played games and enjoy meeting each other.
Like every other church, we are working to navigate these challenging times. Overcoming the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic and now the resurgence of Covid with the Delta variant is challenging. Some have chosen to wait it out by staying at home. This has left some pews empty and workers hard to find but, God is faithful, and the harvest is still ready. We are so grateful that God has allowed us to serve at such a time as this. Revival is on the way!
