Ministry on the Margins at Chilhowie COG
The Chilhowie Church of God may not be the biggest church in town but they are striving for a ministry of high impact and excellence in their community. Senior Pastor Adam Blackwell says “It’s not the number of people you have coming to a worship service or to an event. It’s all about the number of souls that are ready to go when Christ comes back.”
The Chilhowie Church of God offers many different age appropriate ministries for adults and children. One of the ministries they offer is called Kidz Zone. EverySaturday morning for two hours, they offer a service for youth and children 18 and under. Using their van ministry they bring students to their church and minister to them for two hours. From 10 am till noon, the students are fed breakfast, taught a Sunday school lesson, and given time to play and build relationships. The church has gained many students from this ministry. Pastor Adam has a heart to see this ministry expand to other churches, “there is a need in each community for someone to start feeding the hungry children.”
The Chilhowie Church also offers a successful van ministry for adults and children on Sundays and Wednesdays. Many children in the community desire to attend church but lack the necessary transportation. The church also offers a senior adult ministry that meets on Wednesday nights for food and fellowship. “Our story here at Chilhowie is probably the same as many other churches in Virginia we just want to do our part for the kingdom of God so that the next unsaved person will have a chance to come to know Jesus.”
